Miss Brenda Matanga is currently the Managing Attorney of the practice. She leads the Intellectual Property, Real Estate and Conveyancing department. She holds a Bachelor of Law Honours Degree (LLBs) from the University of Zimbabwe and a Masters in Intellectual Property Law (LLM) from the University of Turin (Italy) in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).
Miss Matanga has eight years’ experience of practice as a legal practitioner. She began her career as a Legal Research Assistant for a corporate law consultancy firm where she was involved in projects on restructuring of companies, corporate governance and legal compliance audits, training among other areas. She also worked for one of Zimbabwe’s oldest IP Firms as a Professional Assistant in the patent and trademark department where she acquired substantial experience in Patent filing, trademark and design filing and prosecution at the Zimbabwe Intellectual Property Office (ZIPO) and at the African Regional Intellectual Property Organisation (ARIPO). She later joined a renowned corporate law firm where she was involved in a lot of corporate advisory work and litigation of commercial matters. Following her passion in intellectual property law, Miss Matanga set up and established an IP department for the firm before leaving to form her own practice.
She served as an attaché at the African Regional Intellectual Property Organisation (ARIPO) after her post graduate studies and is currently a resource person of the organisation. Her contributions in the intellectual property law field include the recent amendments to the ARIPO Banjul Protocol on Trademarks in which she is part of the working group behind the analysis and amendment of ARIPO’s legal instruments. She is currently advocating and spearheading the legislative reforms in patent law and update of the Zimbabwe‘s IP laws in general.
Outside the practice she is a Trustee of the Young People Foundation (Zimbabwe Chapter). She is also currently a Board Member of a local steel company and Board Member of the Corporate Governance and Finance Committee of the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) and Board Member of the Zimbabwe German Society. She is actively involved in the development of IP in Africa presents papers and conducts training globally on various intellectual property issues and related practice areas. She is a Councillor and the current Deputy President of the Zimbabwe Institute of Patents and Trademarks Agents (ZIPTA). She was admitted as a foreign member of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys of the United Kingdom (CIPA) in February 2013 and is a member of the International Trademarks Association (INTA, Zimbabwe Women Lawyers Association and an alumni of the University of Turin. Travel, reading, story writing, music, photography, motivational speaking and sport are Miss Matanga’s pastime passions.
